JO ATTIA, also known as “Grand Jo,” “Le Moko,” and “Jo the Boxer.”

Joseph Brahim Attia, known as Jo Attia, also called “Grand Jo,” “Le Moko,” or “Jo the Boxer,” was born on June 10, 1916, in La Richardais, Ille-et-Vilaine, and died on July 22, 1972, in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.

From a young age, Jo had a reputation as a fighter—not for seeking trouble, but for defending those who were weaker or picked on. Well-built and strong, he despised injustice and knew how to use his fists.

Placed in farms as a child, he ran away at the age of 14 and soon turned to theft and various assaults in Lyon and Paris, where he became involved with the criminals of the Bastille. This led to three minor convictions while still a juvenile and a short-lived boxing career, which was abruptly ended by the death of his mentor, “Le Notaire,” who was shot by a man known as Vito the Sicilian. Attia later settled the score with Vito himself.
